San Juan Basin Desalter Project – The San Juan Basin Desalter was constructed by the City of San Juan Capistrano in December 2004.  The facility consists of eight wells that are located along the Lower San Juan subbasin; two of which have been closed and are undergoing mitigation measures. The plant has the capacity to treat 5 million gallons per day (or 15 acre feet). The plant takes groundwater that is high in iron, manganese and total dissolved solids and treats the water using reverse osmosis (RO). Once filtered, chlorine and ammonia is added to the water as a secondary measure, and is then sent to the City of San Juan Capistrano’s delivery system.

For more information about the city's water quality, please visit the City of San Juan Capistrano website.
